Making Raffia Baskets

In answer to a question left about my baskets, yes they are made of raffia.
Periodically while searching through the Thrift shops, I come across raffia which I immediately snap up. I've even found what appears to be a man-made raffia that feels almost plastic-like. But since it comes in varying shades of brown, I'll assume it to be real.
So far I've made 3 different types of baskets but I've recently bought some baskets made by Al Chandronnait, IGMA artisan so am hoping to see how those were made and hopefully learn to make my own.

The pink and the brown baskets have what's known as God's Eye at either handle end. And despite what you may think, they aren't complicated to make.
Decide on the size you want. The pink and mauve basket is 1" tall x 3/4" wide while the brown and beige one is slightly bigger, at 1-1/4 x 1 inch.

Shape the wire frame like this:Now take a piece of raffia the color that you'd like your basket to be and weave it over and around each of the wires at handle junctions:You'll need to make the eye reasonably large because the ribs will fit in behind it.
It's sometimes easier to use thinner wire for the ribs....the finished basket will still look the same. Work both sides evenly and finish off the middle last using a large eyed needle.

This is a coiled basket that I adapted by simply using the same color raffia that I used to sew it together.
You can see that the bottom of my basket has a wire frame...this is not the norm for this type of basket.
Many Indians basket weavers were artists in the way they used colors and designs in their baskets. Each color shift necessitated a change of sewing material. Smaller coil sizes and stitches indicated the finely honed skills of its maker.
Basket weaving is easy and fun once you learn the basic techniques. However if you'd rather not, both God's Eye baskets are available in my Etsy Store.

Easter Swap Update

If you thought my prezzie from Minilisa was outstanding, you should see all the other swap items. My thanks to Caterina not only for organizing it but also for the lovely swap award that she gave to each of us. I definitely want to be in on her next one later this summer.
BTW: here's what I sent to Maia:

Got my truck load of wood chips all down; they were only enough to do 1/2 my path. So I guess I'll have to get some more from the local lumber yard.
We've righted the tent gazebo although the connection on one leg is broken. And... it's just in time for the next wind storm. Haven't heard any more warnings but it's really breezy and there're plenty of white caps on the lake. For a small lake like ours, that's ominous!

Easter Addendum....

...just a big thank you to Annalisa aka Minilisa for her delightful Easter prezzie! Looks like some little (dh) person got into my Easter egg & found a surprise hidden there.
What a perfect present! Thank you soooOo much!!

I spent the weekend with my mom & my grandkids, shopping for birthday clothes for my youngest. Couldn't believe how packed the stores were! The line ups at Wal-Mart were almost as long as the ones for the ferry ride to Toronto's Center Island....a 3 hour wait!
My friend Connie who was selling at the Spring OOAK show told me that most dealers reported low sales & some even said it was the worse show in 20 yrs. Guess it's not only the economy but also our unseasonably warm weather.
We broke the records for warmth 2 days running: Friday the high was 25C and on Saturday it was above 30C....that's more than 86Fahrenheit! The forecasters are calling for rain & colder weather for this week but even the 9C that's predicted will be above the norm for this time of year.
Came home late last night to discover that a wind storm had taken out our tent gazebo that was staked to the ground...lifted it up & flipped it over; knocked over a heavy concrete planter....not a mark on it but it cracked the patio stone in three when it came down; blew all the evergreen boughs & the rest of the ornaments out of my plastic(!) urn...but left the urn standing; didn't touch my 3 plants that I had sheltering underneath the tent gazebo or the tables they were sitting on! Environment Canada had issued a warning that we could expect winds starting out around 50 km/h then strengthening to 90 km/h gusts all within one to two hours. I guess they came our way!
I have a truck load of wood chips coming any minute so I can renew the path running through my woodland garden. I also discovered my first dandelion of the year. So, gotta run & spend some quality garden time. Hope everyone had a great weekend...

City-o-Clay Swap

Here's an email I received today. I don't think I could have received more encouraging words:

Hey Karin ...
I am so very delighted with your little "Tailor of Gloucester" mouse mini! It is absolutely amazing and I love the cute face so much!
You have done an exceptionally fine job making your mini work of art. I can't believe the attention you paid to all the details and how nicely made your piece is. You do quality professional work honey, and I am so honored to have a piece that you have made.
Thank you so much for such a delightful little critter that makes me want to smile every time I see it!

Where other people may have bats in their belfry, you might say I have mice on the brain......I'll bet you thought mice guys finish last LOL (pun courtesy of Ken)
All three teapots available in my etsy store.

April Fools Day

Today I've had the best April Fools joke played on me ....ever!
I could have sworn that just over a week ago (March 21) it was still winter! That should mean that it's only spring now. But the joke's on me ...because today although some snow still lingers in shady areas, we're already in the middle of summer!
We actually reached a high of 25C....77F!!! Pinch me but if I'm dreaming it's one heck of a great dream!
Those are my first bloomers. Everything else has only just started popping up out of the ground.
We had the first water skier out on the lake ....in full body wetsuit, of course. Ken spent the day getting our dock set up again. Even tho he was wearing chest waders, he had to come onto shore frequently to warm up. I should have started on my ATM "Old Santa Fe" swap or the Spring Fling garage. Instead I sat and soaked up the sun.
I expect that this weekend, we'll be inundated with neighbors opening up their cottages. Although I don't really begrudge them, it's so nice when our lake belongs only to the handful of people who live here year round.
I never realized that only in southern Ontario do we cottage. Even elsewhere in Canada, people go to "the cabin" or "the camp". (Apparently in England, cottaging is slang for a gay man's rendezvous in a public park toilet!)
The word "cottage" comes from the medieval word "cotter" meaning a serf who lived in a tiny drafty structure, relieved himself in a pit and barbecued a lot. And that's what it used to mean when people originally bought cottages. Not any more!
Now everyone wants the same comforts on the weekend that they have thru the week. On one side of us, we have one of those original cottages. No insulation; a wood stove for heat but at least they do have an indoor toilet. On the other side, stand three multi-million dollar homes er...cottages. The funny thing is the little rustic cottage is used more frequently than those big monstrosities.
I hear that in Britain, cool rainy weather is predicted for the weekend and my girlfriend in Germany tells me that "weather here is lousy today, again quite a cold wind blowing".
I wish you all a lovely sunny and warm weekend whether you "cottage" or not!

Easter Swap

I'm involved in Catherina's Easter Swap.

My prezzie went to Maia in BC, Canada and I was to receive one sent from Torina, Italy by Annalisa. Mine came today:The card is hand-made.

I'm itching to open the little box & sit what's inside!
I'll be good, Caterina. But boy, it's hard to wait until Easter.
